The Spartans knew about Steel!

SpartaBack in 1961, the American nuclear physicist and research associate at the metallurgical laboratory in Chicago, Lyle Borst, visited Sparta influenced by the bravery of the ancient Spartans to study the weapons used in ancient Greece.
On his trip to Greece, Borst discovered that a “Manhattan District Project” in Sparta made steel in large quantities as early as 650 B.C.
Based on specimens he obtained from archaeologists, he theorized that steel was the secret weapon of the Spartans and that it was the reason for their military successes against enemies having only soft iron or bronze weapons.
Having such a weapon at that time, Borst said in a 1961 article in The New York Times, was almost the military equivalent of having an atomic bomb.
However, that actually stands as a scientific explanation of how 300 men managed to decimate the army of Persians, Medes and Cissians who amounted to 50,000 armed soldiers. Leonidas the brave was a 5th-Century B.C. Spartan military king who  led a small force of Greeks, mostly Spartan the famous 300, but also Thespians and Thebans, against the much larger Persian army of  Xerxes, at the pass of

This Single Chart Proves That Conservatives are Winning Americans' Hearts and Minds

| On 19, Dec 2013

This is a real backbreaker for “progressives” who think they’ve tricked Americans into believing corporations are an existential evil, while big government is a force for positive change:

Gallup reported on the “biggest threat” facing the nation:

Screen Shot 2013-12-19 at 7.21.33 AM

[E]ven a majority of Democrats (56 percent) agree that “big government” poses the greatest threat to the nation’s future, even during the tenure of an incumbent Democratic president. Nevertheless, substantially more Republicans (92 percent) and independents (71) are concerned about the expanding scope of government power.

Today, only 21 percent of Americans perceive “big business” as the biggest threat.

Cue sad trombone. Turns out Americans have enough common sense to figure out that big

A Big Message from a Little Country

I have seen it before – people thoughtlessly renouncing their individual liberties upon the promise of gaining a little collective security. I have seen it happening through the corrupt ways of the government, the politicians, the welfare system, the national single-payer healthcare system, the social security system and the leviathan of debt that was created by all these governmental programs that were supposed to promote and protect the wellbeing of the public. This country is Greece. I grew up and lived there during the earlier part of my life. Now, I see it witlessly dragging itself into the spiraling chasm of economic collapse because it refused to release itself from the bounds of economic protectionism and social nannyism.

The vast span of the government’s power and control over the lives of the Greek people has fostered a culture of corruption and irresponsibility throughout society. Nepotism is rampant, accountability is non-existent and bribery is the name of the game. Need an operation? The doctor from the state-run healthcare system will be conspicuously busy until you convince him that handling your case could be quite profitable. Want to have water, power and phone service installed in your home? The bureaucrat from the respective state-run company will overlook your application unless you refresh his memory with a friendly ‘gift’. Politicians and government ministers, unsurprisingly, do not lack this characteristic either. In effect, one cannot go about one’s daily business without contributing to some bureaucrat’s personal ‘pocket padding fund’. Naturally, this element of corruption does not cease to exist when it comes to the issue of government contracts, nay, it is merely magnified and enlarged to match the sums of money at stake. And that is not all, the worse aspect of this issue is that since the government

Poll: Only Three Percent of Americans Consider Immigration "Most Important" Problem

Christine Rousselle

Despite recent pushes by the Obama administration for immigration reform, a new poll released Thursday by Gallup shows that a majority of Americans are far more concerned with other issues such as healthcare, the economy, and a general sense of dissatisfaction with the government.
Twenty one percent of respondents said that the most important problem facing the United States was dissatisfaction with government, while 19 percent said the economy in general was the most important problem. Rounding out the top three responses was healthcare, which 17 percent labeled as the most important issue. Immigration was second to last with three percent, only slightly above "war/fears of war, lack of respect for each other, and the gap between the rich and the poor," which all garnered two percent of responses.
Immigration has not ranked in the top five of responses all year, as Americans have shown that they are primarily concerned with the economy and healthcare.
Republicans should take these polls into mind when strategizing for 2014 and beyond. It's obvious what Americans are not happy about: healthcare and the economy. By presenting clear plans to fix both of these

How Remote Places Can Get Cellular Coverage by Doing It Themselves

With Swedish telephone numbers and a tree-bound base station, a remote Indonesian village runs its own telecommunications company.

A four-hour drive from the nearest cellular coverage in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, a new kind of guerilla telecom network is operating, albeit outside the law, using a cheap base station roped into a treetop.
The technology could provide a new model for self-managed “last mile” mobile coverage in the world’s hardest-to-reach areas, where traditional top-down telecommunications business models don’t work.
The project was set up by a team from the University of California, Berkeley. The resulting network is now operated by a tiny stand-alone telecommunications company run by a local NGO, with a laptop for local billing and a satellite connection to the rest of the world. The network relies on Swedish phone numbers because no local telecommunications company would provide them.
“It’s a telco-in-a-box that we put in a tree,” says Kurtis Heimerl, a developer at Range Networks and grad student at UC Berkeley who led the project. “It’s a demonstration that these populations can profitably and sustainably manage their own networks. We don’t need telcos to do this; these communities can do this by themselves.”
The village where the network is situated sits in the tropical highlands of Papua—a region where indigenous people avoided contact with westerners until scientists stumbled upon them in 1938.
The project was built partly with existing infrastructure: a small hydro-power generator and a satellite dish that provided Internet connectivity to a local school. To this the Berkeley group added a base station for local cellular connectivity, a battery for nighttime usage, a Wi-Fi router for a local Internet hot spot, and a billing system.
The project started operating this year with an initial $10,000 investment. It has 187 cellular subscribers and an average of $830 per month in revenue (including $368 in profits). That company provides several jobs,

Seeds Of Death

Republic vs. Democracy

Rule by Law vs. Rule by Majority

Just after the completion and signing of the Constitution, in reply to a woman's inquiry as to the type of government the Founders had created, Benjamin Franklin said, "A Republic, if you can keep it."

Not only have we failed to keep it, most don't even know what it is.

A Republic is representative government ruled by law (the Constitution).   A democracy is direct government ruled by the majority (mob rule).   A Republic recognizes the inalienable rights of individuals while democracies are only concerned with group wants or needs (the public good). Lawmaking is a slow, deliberate process in our Constitutional Republic requiring approval from the House, Senate, Executive (President or Governor), The Supreme Court, and individual jurors (jury-nullification).   Lawmaking in our unlawful democracy occurs rapidly requiring approval from the whim of the majority as determined by polls and/or voter referendums.   Voter referendums allow legislators to blame bad law on the people.   A good example of democracy in action is a lynch mob.
Democracies always self-destruct when the non-productive majority realizes that it can vote itself handouts from the productive minority by electing the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury.   To maintain their power, these candidates must adopt an ever-increasing tax and spend policy to satisfy the ever-increasing desires of the majority.   As taxes increase, incentive to produce decreases, causing many of the once productive to drop out and join the non-productive.   When there are no longer enough producers to fund the legitimate functions of government and the socialist programs, the democracy will collapse, always to be followed by a Dictatorship.
Even though nearly every politician, teacher, journalist and citizen believes that our Founders created a democracy, it is absolutely not true.   The Founders knew full well the differences

Liberal ‘media’ group gets $520k dark money donation for war on right

Now the group may have to answer embarrassing questions about its own anonymous donors.
A Watchdog.org review of financial documents reveals the Madison-based CMD, which bills itself as a journalism organization, received $520,000 in 2011 from the Schwab Charitable Fund. That’s 60 percent of the $864,740 CMD received that year.
CMD lists no donors on its tax returns, but its website identifies numerous financial backers without any financial data. Several are highlighted in bold and labeled “current donors.” But one important name is missing: Schwab.

Schwab is a so-called donor-advised fund, a financial institution that manages contributions to nonprofits so that donors remain anonymous. Such donor-advised funds are legal. Like many nonprofits, Watchdog.org’s

The Ultimate Equalizer

Another Batch of Wall Street Villains Freed on Technicality

I love covering trials, which is one reason I've been a little sad since switching over to the Wall Street beat: Few of the bad guys in this world ever even get interviewed by the authorities, much less indicted, so trials are comically rare.
But we did have one last year, a big one, and though it was boring and jargon-laden enough on the surface that at least one juror fought sleep in its opening days, I thought it was fascinating. In a story about the Justice Department's Spring 2012 prosecution of a wide-raging municipal bond bid-rigging case, I called it the "first trial of the modern American mafia":
"Of course, you won't hear about the recent financial corruption case, United States of America v. Carollo, Goldberg and Grimm, called anything like that . . . Dominick Carollo, Steven Goldberg and Peter Grimm were mid-level players who worked for GE Capital. They were involved in a wide-ranging scheme (one that also involved most of America's biggest banks, from Chase to BOA to Wachovia) to skim billions of dollars from America's cities and towns by rigging the auctions banks set up to help towns earn the highest returns on the management of municipal bond issues.
The case was over 10 years in the making and involved offenses that took place long before the 2008 crash. All three defendants were convicted in May 2012, with Goldberg ultimately getting four years and the other two getting three.
Now, they're all free. A New York federal judge last week ordered their convictions overturned in a quiet Thanksgiving-week transaction.

Someday, it will go down in history as the first trial of the modern American mafia. Of course, you won't hear the recent financial corruption case, United States of America v. Carollo, Goldberg and Grimm, called anything like that. If you heard about it at all, you're probably either in the municipal bond business or married to an antitrust lawyer. Even then, all you probably heard was that a threesome of bit players on Wall Street got convicted of obscure antitrust violations in one of the most inscrutable, jargon-packed legal snoozefests since the government's massive case against Microsoft in the Nineties – not exactly the thrilling courtroom drama offered by the famed trials of old-school mobsters like Al Capone or Anthony "Tony Ducks" Corallo.
But this just-completed trial in downtown New York against three faceless financial executives really was historic. Over 10 years in the making, the case allowed federal prosecutors to make public for the first time the astonishing inner workings of the reigning American crime syndicate, which now operates not out of Little Italy and Las Vegas, but out of Wall Street.
The defendants in the case – Dominick Carollo, Steven Goldberg and Peter Grimm – worked for GE Capital, the finance arm of General Electric. Along with virtually every major bank and finance company on Wall Street – not just GE, but J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank of America, UBS, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Wachovia and more – these three Wall Street wiseguys spent the past decade taking part in a breathtakingly broad scheme to skim billions of dollars from the coffers of cities and small towns across America. The banks achieved this gigantic rip-off by secretly colluding to rig the public bids on municipal bonds, a business worth $3.7 trillion. By conspiring to lower the interest rates that towns earn on these investments, the banks systematically stole from schools, hospitals, libraries and nursing homes – from "virtually every state, district

The State Causes the Poverty It Later Claims to Solve

Mises Daily: Saturday, December 07, 2013 by

If one looks at the current paper money system and its negative social and social-political effects, the question must arise: where are the protests by the supporters and protectors of social justice? Why don’t we hear calls to protest from politicians and social commentators, from the heads of social welfare agencies and leading religious leaders, who all promote the general welfare as their mission?
Presumably, the answer is that many have only a weak understanding of the role of money in an economy with a division of labor, and for that reason, the consequences of today’s paper money system are being widely overlooked.
The current system of fractional reserve banking and central banking stands in stark opposition to a market economy monetary regime in which the market participants could decide themselves, without state pressure or coercion, what money they want to use, and in which it would not be possible for anyone to expand the money supply because they simply choose to do so.
The expansion of the money supply, made possible through central banks and fractional reserve banking, is in reality what allows inflation, and thus, declining income in real terms. In The Theory of Money and Credit Ludwig von Mises wrote:
The most important of the causes of a diminution in the value of money of which we have to take account is an increase in the stock of money while the demand for it remains the same, or falls off, or, if it increases, at least increases less than the stock. ... A lower subjective valuation of money is then passed on from person to person because those who come into possession of an additional quantity of money are inclined to consent to pay higher prices than before.[1]
When there are price increases caused by an expansion of the money supply, the prices of various goods and

Obama Administration About to Give "Kill As Many Eagles as You Want" Pass to Wind Farms (This is the Greenies for you)

Katie Pavlich

The punishment for killing a golden or bald eagle in the United States comes at a hefty price. Simply having eagle feathers or parts in your possession will land you in prison with a heavy fine to pay. Felony killing of eagles comes with a fine of $250,000 and prison time. These penalties fall under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
This law, originally passed in 1940, provides for the protection of the bald eagle and the golden eagle (as amended in 1962) by prohibiting the take, possession, sale, purchase, barter, offer to sell, purchase or barter, transport, export or import, of any bald or golden eagle, alive or dead, including any part, nest, or egg, unless allowed by permit Bald Eagle sitting in tree (16 U.S.C. 668(a); 50 CFR 22).

"Take" includes pursue, shoot, shoot at, poison, wound, kill, capture, trap, collect, molest or disturb (16 U.S.C. 668c; 50 CFR 22.3). The 1972 amendments increased civil penalties for violating provisions of the Act to a maximum fine of $5,000 or one year imprisonment with $10,000 or not more than two years in prison for a second conviction. Felony convictions carry a maximum fine of $250,000 or two years of imprisonment. The fine doubles for an organization. Rewards are provided for information leading to arrest and conviction for violation of the Act.
Wind farms in the United States kill thousands of birds, including eagles, every day. For years, the industry has escaped punishment for doing so and now, the Obama administration is getting ready to give the industry a free pass forever.
The Obama administration is moving toward finalizing a rule that would give alternative energy farms a pass for killing bald and golden eagles for decades, just weeks after it took legal action for the first time against a company for doing so.

The rule by the Interior Department extends the length of the permits that allow farms to unintentionally kill the eagles without penalty from five to 30 years, according to department records.

The rule authorizes the “non-purposeful” killing of eagles, but also will require farms to implement certain guidelines to help with eagle conservation. The White House finalized its review of the rule Thursday, The Hill reports.

An official with the Interior Department tells The Hill the department has been working for more

Girl Banned From Selling Mistletoe To Pay For Her Braces; Guess What She Was Told To Do Instead?
Michael Miller
11-year-old Madison Root had a plan to help pay for her braces. She would pick mistletoe and sell it in the market. A security guard stopped her because she didn’t have a permit. His suggestion? Beg for money.
Via The Oregonian: Madison spent much of the day last Friday cutting and bagging mistletoe at her uncle’s farm. On Saturday, the 11-year-old went to the Portland Saturday Market with dozens of beribbonned bags inside. In less than a half-hour, she’d sold seven of them at $4 a pop.
“She had an idea to make some money to help pay for her braces,’’ said her father. Actually, the idea came from her dad, who did the same thing when he was a kid to make extra cash for Christmas presents.
But the sixth-grader’s home-grown business was short-lived.
A private security guard for the market told Madison and her dad that they were violating a city code: “Soliciting For or Conducting Business” in a public park. Under the rule, it’s illegal to “sell or offer to sell any

Those are the most conclusive findings in the study Consumer Payments 2013, made by the Credit Management firm Intrum Justitia which surveyed 10,000 consumers from 21 European countries with the aim of understanding their payment behavior.

In regard to Spain, the percentage of citizens who say they have no money after paying the bills is higher than the European average, which stands at 26 percent, although some countries like

Greece: The history behind the collapse

Historically positioning themselves between an unruly, oriental population and the western powers, since 1981 Greek elites have siphoned off EU funds into a bloated public sector favouring corruption, patronage and social climbing. The threat posed to Europe by the breakdown is less contagion to the centre than a wave of anti-western feeling that could exacerbate geopolitical instabilities in the region.
It all started two years ago, in the autumn of 2009. Having won a convincing victory at the head of the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in the parliamentary elections, the new Greek prime minister, George Papandreou suddenly opened a real Pandora's box. Forced to admit to his electors that he would not be in a position to keep his manifesto promises, he accused his New Democracy opponents and predecessors of having concealed the extent of the deficits and debt. To explain the contradiction between his resounding declaration prior to the election ("There's plenty of money!") and the inevitable austerity policy that would follow, he deliberately exaggerated the position and compared Greece to the Titanic.

His announcement had serious consequences. The markets took fright; the government found that it was unable to finance its deficit or to honour debt repayment dates. Threatened with bankruptcy, the effects of which would destabilize the entire European economy, the European Commission, the ECB and the IMF set up a troika that came to Greece's aid by standing in for it in the markets. In exchange, the Greek government was asked to stabilize the situation by reducing the deficit and undertaking structural reforms. This was in spring 2010.[1]

More than a year later, in summer 2011, there was no mistaking the fact that these measures had failed. Reforms had been carried forward only minimally; the public sector was still acting in a spendthrift fashion, despite cuts in salaries and pensions, whilst the public spending deficit had been only slightly reduced and the ratio of debt to GDP was rising. The Greek government, bogged down in its own contradictions, had taken steps that were too late, utterly inadequate and, very often, counter-productive. The administration, already ineffectual and dysfunctional, was now immobilized by incoherent political reactions. The economy slid into a deep recession that could only partly be accounted for by the absence of state stimulus measures and a shrinkage in the purchasing power of civil servants and pensioners. A series of contradictory statements from the government posed threats to various sections of the population (doctors, lawyers, civil servants, and so

From Greece: what is to be done? – A Pamphlet
greeceIn the spring of 2012, the euro crisis intensified dramatically. The epicenter of the crisis is Greece, a country that has been experiencing a severe recession since the beginning of the world economic crisis. What outcome this recession will yield is a decisive question not just for Greece, but for all of Europe and indeed for the entire world economy. We need therefore to consider the story behind this crisis, and the restructuring programs imposed, since May of 2010, by the so-called “troika” (the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund). We also need to consider possible alternatives to these restructuring programs.
In 1981, Greece became a member of the European Community. A spirit of optimism prevailed in the country. The Socialist Party (PASOK), an offshoot of the Pan-Hellenic Resistance Movement against the 1967–1974 military dictatorship, had won the parliamentary elections for the first time. Due to its welfare-oriented platform, PASOK enjoyed widespread popular support.
As the conservative Karamanlis government stepped down, there began an era of social, cultural, scholarly and economic progress. This trend was in no way affected by the monetary restrictions associated with the European Monetary System that had been introduced within the European Community in 1979.[1]
Greece was not to join this system until 1993. Like the currencies of the other new southern European member states (Portugal and Spain), the drachma was kept outside the currency agreement. While the intra-European disparities in economic development entailed certain distortions of competition, the Greek government was able to compensate for their effects by periodically devaluing the Greek currency. Thus

The Origins of the Greek Financial Crisis

Letter from Thessaloniki
Before the modern Greek state assumed its present day contours in the aftermath of the first world war, communities in the trading cities of Alexandria, Odessa, Salonika, Smyrna, and Trieste, already had a long history of running their own school systems, hospitals, and orphanages. This was partly a legacy of Ottoman rule. With the exception of political stability, the Ottomans were not in the habit of providing public goods so, when it came to public health and economic development, citizens had to fend for themselves. That system worked. Through local and communal organization, by the mid to late nineteenth century, the Greeks were one of the most prosperous and dynamic groups in Southeast Europe.
Once the Greek state was fully formed, however, a central administrative structure took over communal institutions. Powerful new national party machines displaced the local elites who'd successfully served as administrators. In Greece's second largest city, Salonika, this process took a bit more than a decade. Between 1912, when the city was integrated into the Greek Kingdom, and 1925, Salonika's schools, hospitals, and other institutions were nationalized and its local trustees were replaced by centrally appointed bureaucrats. Likewise, the responsibility for funding these institutions passed to the central government. To grasp how dramatic the change was, imagine that Washington nationalized all colleges and universities in the state of Massachusetts, Harvard included, and then ran them through political appointees.
So, as the Greek state expanded territorially it also expanded its responsibilities, undercutting old traditions of localism and community action. Herein lies the root of the country's current crisis. Long-established, autonomous local elites were displaced in the 1920s, their place taken by a new group of people adept at
