New Report Reveals How Congress’ Misplaced Priorities Are Destroying Our Nation's Most Prized National Parks (Even there the

Whenever the federal government steps in, inefficiency, dysfunction and waste seem to be quick to follow—and the National Park Service is no different. In a new report titled, “PARKED! How Congress’ Misplaced Priorities are Trashing Our National Treasures,” Sen. Tom Coburn documents how the agency’s bloated bureaucracy has led to wasteful spending and resulted in the neglect and decaying of national parks. Via Fox News:

Taxpayers shell out $52,000 a year to maintain the home of Black History Month founder Carter Woodson. Yet the tiny, dilapidated row house in northwest Washington D.C., with a "No Trespassing" sign and iron bars blocking the front door and windows hasn’t seen a visitor in the seven years since the National Park Service bought it for $2.1 million and designated it a National Historic Site.
Senator Tom Coburn, R-Okla., points to the house as one tiny symbol in a sea of dysfunction in the National Park Service. The Service, with its comparatively small budget, is, he says, a microcosm for wasteful spending in the federal government.
A report released Tuesday by Coburn's office finds the National Park Service devotes huge portions of its budget to the purchase of more and more federal properties and land, even while the country’s most treasured national parks are falling into disrepair and neglect.

But he doesn’t place the blame squarely on the Park Service.
“Long before the government shutdown and sequestration, our parks had become a physical manifestation of Congress’ dysfunction,”Coburn said in a statement.
“For years, members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have put their parochial desires ahead of the nation’s best interest. Funding for low-priority and obscure parks earmarked by lawmakers has come at the cost of caring for our national treasures like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the National Mall and Independence Park in Philadelphia. Last year alone, the National Park Service put off more than a quarter billion dollars in much needed maintenance projects, adding to the $11.5 billion maintenance backlog already threatening the health, safety, and accessibility of park visitors.”
Coburn concludes the report with a series of recommendations, including how to eliminate the maintenance funding shortfall and hold Congress and the administration accountable.
“I hope this report inspires my colleagues to set common sense priorities and make sure our parks reflect our nation’s greatness rather than Washington’s incompetence,” he said.

To πρώτο κοσμικό Αλφάβητο της Κρήτης

Παλαιότερα επικρατούσε η θεωρία ότι οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες παρέλαβαν το αλφάβητο από τους Φοίνικες, οι οποίοι κατοικούσαν στις ακτές της Συρίας – Παλαιστίνης. Η σπουδαιότητα της ανακοίνωσης του Βέντρις για την επιστήμη γενικότερα (που έλυνε, επιτέλους, το μυστήριο, το μυστήριο των πινακίδων της γραμμικής γραφής Β’), αλλά ιδίως για τον ελληνικό πολιτισμό, που η γραπτή του παράδοση μεταφερόταν επτά περίπου αιώνες νωρίτερα (από τον 8ο αιώνα π.Χ. στον 15ον), ήταν ανυπολόγιστης σημασίας. Why It’s A Bad Deal If The Other Fellow Pays For Healthcare

“Make no mistake: The cost of our health care is a threat to our economy.  It’s an escalating burden on our families and businesses.  It’s a ticking time bomb for the federal budget.  And it is unsustainable for the United States of America.”

Spoken by Barack Obama, on June 15, 2009 at the Annual Conference of the American Medical Association, and he was right on.  The healthcare system of the United States is broken.

The big question is why?  Answering that question correctly is essential when considering possible fixes.
A big contributor to the problem is that most medical services are paid by parties other than the individual receiving care.  A solution to the problems we have MUST include keeping the payments for services as closely-connected as possible to the person receiving those services.  One always is more careful spending their own money than spending someone else’s.
Years ago I worked for a company where a part of my compensation was dependent upon the expenses I incurred.  I received ten percent of of the net proceeds my sales activities generated.  “Net proceeds” was after any and all business costs.  The lower my expenses, the greater my income.  So far, so good.  The intention was to create an incentive to increase revenue and lower costs.
The other way to look at it was every dollar of expenses I incurred left me with a dime’s less income.  Some of the expenses were not discretionary: a certain amount was apportioned for company overhead; recurring items like phone, auto, and things of that nature.  Again, so far so good.  The less I spent, the more I made.
Some things, however, were discretionary and a reverse incentive appeared here.  A business is left with a dollar’s less income for every dollar in expenses whereas I lost only ten cents.  The discretionary stuff is where the fun happened.  Entertainment was a big part of gaining and maintaining: dinners, golf, trips, etc.  Certainly they were necessary and an important part of the business, but the reverse incentive impacted my

According to a recent Fox News poll, 73 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with the direction of the country, up 20 points from 2012. Americans sense that there's a lot going wrong in our nation, but most don't have a clue about the true nature of our problem. If they had a clue, most would have little stomach for what would be necessary to arrest our national decline. Let's look at it.

Between two-thirds and three-quarters of federal spending, in contravention of the U.S. Constitution, can be described as Congress taking the earnings or property of one American to give to another, to whom it does not belong. You say, "Williams, what do you mean?" Congress has no resources of its very own. Moreover, there's no Santa Claus or tooth fairy who gives it resources. The fact that Congress has no resources of its very own forces us to recognize that the only way Congress can give one American one dollar is to first -- through intimidation, threats and coercion -- confiscate that dollar from some other American through the tax code.
If any American did privately what Congress does publicly, he'd be condemned as an ordinary thief. Taking what belongs to one American to give to another is theft, and the receiver is a recipient of stolen property. Most Americans would suffer considerable anguish and cognitive dissonance seeing themselves as recipients of stolen property, so congressional theft has to be euphemized and given a respectable name. That respectable name is "entitlement." Merriam-Webster defines entitlement as "the condition of having a right to have, do, or get something." For example, I am entitled to walk into the house that I own. I am entitled to drive the car that I own. The challenging question is whether I am also entitled to what you or some other American owns.
Let's look at a few of these entitlements. More than 40 percent of federal spending is for entitlements for the elderly in the forms of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, housing and other assistance programs. The Office of Management and Budget calculates that total entitlement spending comes to about 62 percent of federal spending. Military spending totals 19 percent of federal spending. The best-performing bond-fund managers in the world this year aren't in London, New York or California. They are based in Athens.
Panos Simos of NBG Asset Management and Aris Papageorgakopoulos and John Gikas of Eurobank Asset Management manage three bond funds that have delivered returns of more than 100% in the past year. No other bond funds tracked by Morningstar globally have offered such returns.
All three top performers have won big from making the same bet: buying Greek government bonds at the height of the euro-zone debt crisis and holding onto them when other investors were steering clear.

Investors' perception of Greece has turned around sharply in recent months. Some Greek government-bond prices have more than quadrupled from their nadir in June 2012, as fears of a Greek exit from the euro zone receded. Some major Greek companies have successfully issued bonds, and big-name investors have returned to Greek equities. Army Briefing Labels Tea Party, Christians as Terror Threats

Soldiers attending a pre-deployment briefing at Fort Hood say they were told that evangelical Christians and members of the Tea Party were a threat to the nation and that any soldier donating to those groups would be subjected to punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
A soldier who attended the Oct. 17th briefing told me the counter-intelligence agent in charge of the meeting spent nearly a half hour discussing how evangelical Christians and groups like the American Family Association were “tearing the country apart.”
Michael Berry, an attorney with the Liberty Institute, is advising the soldier and has launched an investigation into the incident.
“The American public should be outraged that the U.S. Army is teaching our troops that evangelical Christians and Tea Party members are enemies of America, and that they can be punished for supporting or participating in those groups,” said Berry, a former Marine Corps JAG officer.
“These statements about evangelicals being domestic enemies are a serious charge.”
The soldier told me he fears reprisals and asked not to be identified. He said there was a blanket statement that donating to any groups that were considered a threat to the military and government was punishable under military regulations.
“My first concern was if I was going to be in trouble going to church,” the evangelical Christian soldier told me. “Can I tithe? Can I donate to Christian charities? What if I donate to a politician who is a part of the Tea Party movement?”
Another soldier who attended the briefing alerted the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty. That individual’s recollections of the briefing matched the soldier who reached out to me.
“I was very shocked and couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” the soldier said. “I felt like my religious liberties, that I risk my life and sacrifice time away from family to fight for, were being taken away.”
And while a large portion of the briefing dealt with the threat evangelicals and the Tea Party pose to the nation, barely a word was said about Islamic extremism, the soldier said.

President Obama repeatedly assured Americans that after the Affordable Care Act became law, people who liked their health insurance would be able to keep it. But millions of Americans are getting or are about to get cancellation letters for their health insurance under Obamacare, say experts, and the Obama administration has known that for at least three years.

Four sources deeply involved in the Affordable Care Act tell NBC NEWS that 50 to 75 percent of the 14 million consumers who buy their insurance individually can expect to receive a “cancellation” letter or the equivalent over the next year because their existing policies don’t meet the standards mandated by the new health care law. One expert predicts that number could reach as high as 80 percent. And all say that many of those forced to buy pricier new policies will experience “sticker shock.” 
None of this should come as a shock to the Obama administration. The law states that policies in effect as of March 23, 2010 will be “grandfathered,” meaning consumers can keep those policies even though they don’t meet requirements of the new health care law. But the Department of Health and Human Services then wrote regulations that narrowed that provision, by saying that if any part of a policy was significantly changed since that date -- the deductible, co-pay, or benefits, for example -- the policy would not be grandfathered.
Buried in Obamacare regulations from July 2010 is an estimate that because of normal turnover in the individual insurance market, “40 to 67 percent” of customers will not be able to keep their policy. The ObamaCare website has become an epic model of government dysfunction, waste, graft and incompetence. It turns out that more than a fair share of cronyism might be involved, as well.
According to the Daily Caller, one of Michelle Obama’s Princeton classmates is a big-wig at the Canadian company that received a no-bid contract to design the ObamaCare exchanges for Healthcare.gov:

Η μεταφραστική γκάφα είναι πολύ διασκεδαστική, η πολιτική γκάφα είναι για κλάματα –αλλά πρώτα θα σας διηγηθώ μιαν ιστορία που μπορεί να είναι αληθινή, μπορεί να είναι απλώς μπεντροβάτη.
Πριν από καμιά δεκαπενταριά χρόνια, μια Ελληνίδα είχε προσληφθεί στο ιδιαίτερο γραφείο ενός επιτρόπου της Κομισιόν, το οποίο λέγεται cabinet στα γαλλικά και αποκαλείται «καμπινέ» στην καθομιλουμένη των Ελλήνων ευρωϋπαλλήλων, όχι χωρίς μια δόση ειρωνείας, αν σκεφτούμε ότι ο προϊστάμενος του ιδιαίτερου γραφείου λέγεται καμπινεδάρχης. Όταν με το καλό η κοπέλα γύρισε όλο καμάρι το καλοκαίρι στο χωριό της, τη ρώτησαν οι γυναίκες του μαχαλά πού δουλεύει, κι αυτή απάντησε, χωρίς να το σκεφτεί, «στο καμπινέ». Όπως καταλαβαίνετε, βούιξε το χωριό για την κόρη του τάδε που γύρισε με μια μύτη μέχρι κειπάνω ενώ καθαρίζει καμπινέδες εκεί στην Ευρώπη που την έστειλε ο πατέρας της –σαν δεν ντρέπεται κι αυτός, να τη σπουδάσει δικηγορίνα για να καθαρίζει τους απόπατους των Βέλγων.

Είπαμε, η ιστορία μπορεί να μην είναι αληθινή αλλά απλώς γουστόζικη, πάντως το γεγονός είναι ότι η λέξη cabinet στα γαλλικά σημαίνει ένα σωρό πράγματα: ένα μικρό δωμάτιο πλάι σ’ ένα μεγαλύτερο, έναν χώρο όπου αποσυρόμαστε για να μελετήσουμε, ένα δωμάτιο-γραφείο, αλλά και το γραφείο μελετών ή το δικηγορικό γραφείο, ή το σύνολο των συμβούλων μιας εξέχουσας πολιτικής προσωπικότητας, άρα και το υπουργικό συμβούλιο· σημαίνει επίσης έναν χώρο ή ένα έπιπλο όπου φυλάμε πολύτιμα αντικείμενα· σημαίνει, τέλος, ένα δωματιάκι ή έναν χώρο όπου αποσύρεται κανείς για να καλλωπιστεί, ή για να ανακουφιστεί από τις σωματικές του ανάγκες, αυτό που εμείς λέμε καμπινέ: το αποχωρητήριο, τον απόπατο, την τουαλέτα, το βεσέ, το μέρος.

I was born at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. My mother would later take a job delivering babies in that same operating room only a couple years later. Report: U.S. Has Spent $3.7 Trillion on Welfare Since Obama's Election by Emily Hulsey

Republicans have released research showing that since 2009, the U.S. has spent about $3.7 trillion on welfare. As you can see by this chart, that’s nearly five times greater than transportation, education, and NASA spending combined:

The $3.7 trillion price tag includes more than 80 means-tested welfare programs. Means-tested programs are granted based on a person’s income levels and, unlike Social Security or Medicare, are not paid into by the recipient.

“The enormous sum spent on means-tested assistance is nearly five times greater than the combined amount spent on NASA, education, and all federal transportation projects over that time. ($3.7 trillion is not even the entire amount spent on federal poverty support, as states contribute more than $200 billion each year to this federal nexus—primarily in the form of free low-income health care.)

Inflation is a sustained increase in the aggregate price level. Hyperinflation is very high inflation. Although the threshold is arbitrary, economists generally reserve the term “hyperinflation” to describe episodes when the monthly inflation rate is greater than 50 percent. At a monthly rate of 50 percent, an item that cost $1 on January 1 would cost $130 on January 1 of the following year.

Hyperinflation is largely a twentieth-century phenomenon. The most widely studied hyperinflation occurred in Germany after World War I. The ratio of the German price index in November 1923 to the price index in August 1922—just fifteen months earlier—was 1.02 × 10¹⁰. This huge number amounts to a monthly inflation rate of 322 percent. On average, prices quadrupled each month during the sixteen months of hyperinflation.
While the German hyperinflation is better known, a much larger hyperinflation occurred in Hungary after World War II. Between August 1945 and July 1946 the general level of prices rose at the astounding rate of more than 19,000 percent per month, or 19 percent per day.
Even these very large numbers understate the rates of inflation experienced during the worst days of the hyperinflations. In October 1923, German prices rose at the rate of 41 percent per day. And in July 1946, Hungarian prices more than tripled each day.
What causes hyperinflations? No single shock, no matter how severe, can explain sustained, continuously rapid growth in prices. The world wars themselves did not cause the hyperinflations in Germany and Hungary. The destruction of resources during the wars can explain why prices in Germany and Hungary would be higher after the wars than before. But the wars themselves cannot explain why prices would

Weimar Germany had greeted with total horror the financial punishment of Versailles. If Germany had paid off the sum of £6,600,000,000, she would have remained in debt to the Allies until 1987 !! However, by signing the Treaty of Versailles, she had agreed in principle to the issue of reparations and in 1921, Germany just about managed to pay its first installment of 2 billion gold marks. Weimar Germany was allowed to pay in kind (actual materials) as opposed to just cash. Most of this 2 billion was paid in coal, iron and wood.
In 1922, Weimar Germany simply could not manage to pay another installment. This the Allies did not believe - especially France where anger towards Germany still ran deep - and the German government was accused of trying to get out of her reparations responsibilities. This apparent refusal was only four years after the end of the war, and the attitude of the public towards Germany was still very hostile - and not just in France.
In 1922, French and Belgium troops invaded the Ruhr; Germany’s most valuable industrial area. The French and Belgium troops took over the iron and steel factories, coal mines and railways. Those Germans who lived in the Ruhr and were considered not to be co-operating with the Germans were imprisoned. Food was taken. That this action by the French and Belgium broke the rules of the League of Nations - which both belonged to - was ignored by both countries. France was considered one of the League's most powerful members and here she was violating its own code of conduct.
Weimar’s government responded by ordering the workers in the Ruhr to go on strike and it ordered all people in the Ruhr to passively resist the French and Belgium soldiers. This meant that they were not to openly confront the French and Belgium soldiers, simply that they were not to help them in any way whatsoever. This lead to violence and over the next 8 months of the occupation, 132 people were killed and

Η συμμετοχή της Ελλάδας στην Ε.Ε. την οποία επιδιώκουν οι ελληνικές κυβερνήσεις από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’60 και η οποία εγκαινιάσθηκε το 1980 αποτελεί συνέπεια δύο βασικών γεωπολιτικών δεδομένων. Πρώτον, του χωρισμού της Ευρώπης σε ανατολικό και δυτικό στρατόπεδο με αποτέλεσμα η Ελλάδα να αποτελεί μέχρι το 1989 τη μοναδική χώρα που ανήκε στη δυτική συμμαχία και το ΝΑΤΟ στη νοτιοανατολική Ευρώπη έναντι των υπόλοιπων βαλκανικών χωρών που ανήκαν είτε στο σύμφωνο της Βαρσοβίας, είτε στους αδέσμευτους (Γιουγκοσλαβία), είτε συμμαχούσαν με την «μακρινή κόκκινη Κίνα» (η Αλβανία του Εμβερ Χότζα). Ο χωρισμός των Βαλκανίων ανάμεσα σε μια «δυτική» Ελλάδα και τις υπόλοιπες χώρες απέκλειε λίγο πολύ μια βαλκανική στρατηγική, τέτοια που προσπάθησε να αναπτύξει ο Παπαναστασίου από το 1930. Το δεύτερο γεωπολιτικό δεδομένο το οποίο επιτείνεται μετά το 1974 την κατοχή της Β. Κύπρου από την Τουρκία και την τουρκική επιθετικότητα στο Αιγαίο, είναι η αντιμετώπιση της τουρκικής απειλής μέσω της προσφυγής σε μια ευρύτερη ευρωπαϊκή συμμαχία. Στρατηγική που ήταν ιδιαίτερα εμφανής στις προσπάθειες του Κων. Καραμανλή και την ιδιαίτερη σχέση που ανέπτυξε με την Γαλλία στην δεκαετία του ’70.
Τέλος, και ίσως αποφασιστικότερης σημασίας, η παρασιτική φύση του κεφαλαίου έναντι της Δύσης βαθειά ριζωμένη στην ελληνική κοινωνική και οικονομική πραγματικότητα, ολοκλήρωνε τον «μονόδρομο» της στροφής προς την Ε.Ε. Και όλα αυτά παρ’ ότι ήταν προφανές πως η ένταξη αυτή θα είχε αρνητικές συνέπειες ιδιαίτερα για την ελληνική βιομηχανική παραγωγή η οποία καλούνταν να ανταγωνιστεί χωρίς δασμολογική προστασία τις πολύ ισχυρότερες δυτικοευρωπαϊκές οικονομίες.

An Important Distinction: Democracy versus Republic

It is important to keep in mind the difference between a Democracy and a Republic, as dissimilar forms of government. Understanding the difference is essential to comprehension of the fundamentals involved. It should be noted, in passing, that use of the word Democracy as meaning merely the popular type of government--that is, featuring genuinely free elections by the people periodically--is not helpful in discussing, as here, the difference between alternative and dissimilar forms of a popular government: a Democracy versus a Republic. This double meaning of Democracy--a popular-type government in general, as well as a specific form of popular government--needs to be made clear in any discussion, or writing, regarding this subject, for the sake of sound understanding.
These two forms of government: Democracy and Republic, are not only dissimilar but antithetical, reflecting the sharp contrast between (a) The Majority Unlimited, in a Democracy, lacking any legal safeguard of the rights of The Individual and The Minority, and (b) The Majority Limited, in a Republic under a written Constitution safeguarding the rights of The Individual and The Minority; as we shall now see.

A Democracy
The chief characteristic and distinguishing feature of a Democracy is: Rule by Omnipotent Majority. In a Democracy, The Individual, and any group of Individuals composing any Minority, have no protection against the unlimited power of The Majority. It is a case of Majority-over-Man.
This is true whether it be a Direct Democracy, or a Representative Democracy. In the direct type, applicable only to a small number of people as in the little city-states of ancient Greece, or in a New England town-meeting, all of the electorate assemble to debate and decide all government questions, and all decisions are reached by a majority vote (of at least half-plus-one). Decisions of The Majority in a New England town-meeting are, of course, subject to the Constitutions of the State and of the United States which protect The Individual’s rights; so, in this case, The Majority is not omnipotent and such a town-meeting is, therefore, not an example of a true Direct Democracy. Η μεγάλη επιτυχία του κ. Στουρνάρα είναι η δημιουργία σχετικής δημοσιονομικής σταθερότητας. Παρ’ όλα αυτά, επειδή φαίνεται να περνάει Συμπληγάδες ως υπουργός, μερικές παρατηρήσεις ίσως του φανούν χρήσιμες. 

Το πρωτογενές δημοσιονομικό πλεόνασμα φέτος θα είναι μικρό, όταν συνυπολογίσουμε και τις πλήρεις δαπάνες για την υγεία και τις μεταβιβάσεις από τις ξένες κεντρικές τράπεζες. Παραμένει όμως πλεόνασμα και η μεταστροφή από το έλλειμμα του 2010 είναι γιγαντιαία. Προσφέρει λοιπόν ένα διαπραγματευτικό χαρτί, το οποίο η κυβέρνηση και ο κ. Στουρνάρας έχουν υποχρέωση να αξιοποιήσουν. Αυτό σημαίνει δύο πράγματα. 

Πρώτο, όχι μόνο δεν πρέπει να επιβληθούν άλλα μέτρα, αλλά θα πρέπει να υπάρξει ελάφρυνση της σημερινής περιοριστικής πολιτικής. Γνωρίζει ο κ. Στουρνάρας ότι το πλεόνασμα είναι εξαιρετικά ασταθές, έστω κι αν δεχτούμε ότι δεν έχει υπάρξει ‘δημιουργική λογιστική’ στην καταγραφή των δημοσίων δαπανών και εσόδων. Το πλεόνασμα προήλθε από τη συντριβή των δημοσίων δαπανών και την καταιγίδα των φόρων που κράτησαν σχετικά ψηλά τα δημόσια έσοδα. Ακριβώς αυτή η πολιτική όμως προκάλεσε και τη βαθύτατη ύφεση. Το πραγματικό αντίτιμο του πλεονάσματος είναι η ανεργία κοντά στο 28% και η συρρίκνωση του ΑΕΠ κατά περίπου 25%. Εφόσον όμως η οικονομία συρρικνώθηκε βίαια, η απόδοση των φόρων, ιδίως των έμμεσων και των φόρων εισοδήματος, παραμένει βαθιά προβληματική. Μια κατεστραμμένη οικονομία που παραμένει σε ύφεση δύσκολα θα δημιουργήσει σημαντικά επιπλέον φορολογικά έσοδα, όποια νέα μέτρα και να επιβληθούν. 'Fast and Furious' is Ok, But The Innocent Gun Buyer Goes to Prison

It might seem like idiocy on steroids, but that’s kinda how our Federal Government operates. Ever thought about helping out a family member by buying them that hunting rifle they’ve been looking at, or that Glock 19 they’ve been talking about getting? Well, prepare for prison if you buy it for them. A well established, and yet often ignored, law that was designed to stop criminals from getting their hands on guns through a third party might actually make more criminals than it catches.
Anyone here remember the “Fast and Furious” scandal? Ya know, where the ATF and Department of Justice decided to help straw purchasers walk guns into Mexico for drug cartels? Thousands of guns were handed over, with the Fed’s knowledge and consent, to cartels that take hostages, kill civilians, and proliferate drug related violence in the US and Mexico.
Apparently, as evidenced by the agency’s disinterest in conducting investigations into the operation, such government run straw purchases – that benefit drug cartels – are not a terrible threat to public safety. But letting family members purchase each other guns? Whoa. . . We can’t permit such dastardly, and potentially lethal, activity to go unchecked. . .
Last week the Supreme Court heard the case of a Virginia man who legally purchased a gun – then resold it to another legally eligible individual. According to the Washington Times, “Both men were legally entitled to own a gun. Both passed the required background checks. As an ex-cop, Mr. Abramski bought a Glock 19 and obtained a law-enforcement discount. He consulted three federally licensed dealers to make sure he did everything by the book when he transferred the gun to his uncle in Pennsylvania.” Thank heaven the ATF caught that retired police officer who had the audacity to buy a gun for his law-abiding uncle. I know I’ll sleep better tonight.
The intent behind prosecuting straw purchases (unless conducted in conjunction with Mexican drug lords and ATF informants) is supposed to be to keep lawful citizens from purchasing a gun for people who are disallowed from owning a firearm. The High Court is expected to make a decision in regards to whether or not this federal law should apply to situations where the straw purchaser (in this case Mr. Abramski) purchased a firearm for a person who is legally allowed to own a firearm.

Ε.Πα.Μ.: Ή με το φασισμό και το «συνταγματικό» του τόξο, ή με τη Δημοκρατική Ενότητα και την παλλαϊκή συσπείρωση.

Κάλεσμα της Πολιτικής Γραμματείας του Ε.Πα.Μ. προς όλα τα κόμματα της κοινοβουλευτικής και της εξωκοινοβουλευτικής αντιπολίτευσης, προς κάθε συλλογικότητα και κίνηση που δηλώνει ότι τάσσεται απέναντι στις πολιτικές των μνημονίων.

Τώρα πια όλοι γνωρίζουν. Κανείς δεν μπορεί να ισχυρίζεται ότι έκανε λάθος επειδή δεν γνώριζε. Η εμπειρία τεσσάρων σχεδόν χρόνων εφαρμογής της πιο ανάλγητης πολιτικής που εφαρμόστηκε ποτέ σε μια χώρα, υποτίθεται δημοκρατική, του λεγόμενου δυτικού κόσμου, δεν αφήνουν περιθώρια υπεκφυγής και δικαιολογίας στον οποιονδήποτε.

Οι εκατοντάδες νόμοι που οι υποτελείς κυβερνήσεις ενέταξαν στο Εθνικό Δίκαιο, παραβιάζοντας και αγνοώντας την θέληση του Λαού, αλλά και την ίδια τη Βουλή, έχουν πλέον μεταλλάξει ριζικότατα τον χαρακτήρα του πολιτεύματος, προς όφελος των δανειστών/τοκογλύφων. Έχουν αλλάξει τον χαρακτήρα του Κράτους σε τέτοιο βαθμό, που ακόμα και αυτή η διαθέσιμη Δημοκρατία που υπήρχε μέχρι σήμερα, έχει αρχίσει να χάνεται ανεπιστρεπτί.

But now Mr. Provopoulos faces one of the bigger challenges of his tumultuous reign: an investigation into whether he abused his position by clearing a banking deal involving his former employer and a business magnate who was subsequently charged with embezzlement and fraud.

In a confidential report issued last May, a senior Greek prosecutor said that Mr. Provopoulos approved the 71 million euro ($96 million) deal despite warnings from his staff regarding the buyer’s finances. The report, parts of which were reviewed by The New York Times, hints at the scope of the investigation, about which little has been previously disclosed.

There is no evidence that Mr. Provopoulos profited personally from the transaction, which was ultimately approved. But his role — and the chance, however remote, that he might face criminal charges — could have ramifications beyond Greece. Other countries in the euro zone have invested more than 40 billion euros to shore up the Greek banking system. In the process, they have pressed Athens to clean up the corruption

EU weighs options for common bank bailout fund

LUXEMBOURG (AP) — Eurozone finance ministers on Monday sought ways to create a common fund to restructure or bail out troubled banks, an effort to keep financial problems in one country from endangering the entire 17-nation currency zone.
The ministers' discussions in Luxembourg were still in early stages, not least because of resistance from Germany and other countries that have paid the bulk of Europe's rescue programs.
The fund would complete Europe's planned banking union and help restore market confidence, but Berlin and others capitals have concerns about its legal basis and fear their taxpayers will be stuck with bills to clean up messy banks in weaker European economies.
Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who chairs the meetings of the Eurogroup of finance ministers, said the discussions were meant to make progress on technical details, but not yet to reach an overall agreement. Still, he acknowledged, "we need to provide full clarity soon."
Before the fund can become operational, European countries aim to set up a new banking authority with the power to restructure or unwind banks that went bust. That is expected to happen once the European Central Bank — in its new role as supervisor for the bloc's biggest banks — has analyzed all balance sheets to identify possible capital shortfalls by late next year.

Untaxed and Overpaid IMF Bureaucrats Recommend Huge Tax Hikes in America, by Daniel J. Mitchell

If there was a special award for chutzpah, the easy winner would be the bureaucrats at the International Monetary Fund. These pampered bureaucrats get lavishly compensated and don’t have to pay tax on their bloated salaries.

The gold-plated fringe benefits include “your spouse/partner may join you on official travel at Fund expense.”

You would think this would make them a bit sensitive to the notion that it’s hugely hypocritical of them to propose big tax hikes when they have a special exemption.
But they have no shame. The international bureaucracy is making a renewed push for higher taxes all over the world.
You can read the actual IMF report, but the UK-based Guardian does a very good job of summarizing the important details.
The key takeaway is that the bureaucrats are telling governments to make the VAT more onerous (a standard IMF recommendation) and to raise other taxes as well.

And what are those other taxes? Well, the IMF is very promiscuous when urging the confiscation of other people’s money.

If Oreos had existed at the turn of the twentieth century, Sherlock Holmes might have been addicted to them rather than cocaine. Joseph Schroeder, a neuroscientist from Connecticut College, has evidence that Oreos can be as addictive as the drug because they catalyze the same neurons in the brain’s pleasure center.

Schroeder and his colleagues performed lab testing in which rats were put in a maze which had two paths, one to rice cakes and one to Oreos. After the rats found both paths, they were allowed to roam freely, and they overwhelmingly chose Oreos.
The test was a replica of one involving saline injections on one side and cocaine on the other, and the results of both tests were that the time spent with the cocaine was the same as the time they spent with the Oreos.
The rats also preferred the cream part of the Oreo to the chocolate biscuit.

In a watershed moment for the United States, it has now surpassed Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest supplier of oil.
According to PIRA, an energy analysis firm, the skyrocketing oil output over the last four years is the most dizzying ascent since Saudi Arabia’s from 1970-1974. Since 2009, U.S. oil output has climbed 3.2 million barrels per day (bpd). The total includes natural gas liquids and biofuels.


The trigger for the huge expansion is the shale revolution, which has seen areas such as the Bakken in North Dakota and Eagle Ford in Texas lead the way as U.S. supplies jumped 1 million bpd in 2012 and repeated that jump in 2013.



Because of the huge jump in supplies, the U.S. is no longer the number one importer of crude oil; that spot now belongs to China. PIRA Energy Group noted, “The U.S. growth rate is greater than the sum of the growth of the next nine fastest growing countries combined and has covered most of the world's net demand growth over the past two years... The U.S. position as the largest oil supplier in the world looks to be secure for many years.”



In 2013, total liquids that are produced by the U.S.—comprised of crude oil, condensate, biofuels, and natural gas liquids—are expected to average 12.1 million bpd, ahead of Saudi Arabia. Even though Saudi Arabia’s output grew last year, the growth in U.S. output was greater.

On religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both.
I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in "A," "B," "C" and "D." Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me?
And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of "conservatism."
