Scientists Find Most Effective Cancer Pill Yet

A new pill used a in a leukemia study may be the answer to treating several types of cancer, according to The Telegraph.
The drug uses “delta inhibitors” to boost the immune system. The drug was so effective during trials on mice, doctors at the University College of London and the Babraham Institiute in Cambridge switched the control group from placebos to the drug on ethical grounds. Plus, the drug has the added benefit of “teaching” the body to stave off cancer, creating a natural immunity of sorts, unlike chemotherapy, which weakens the immune system.
“This helps your own immune system fight off the cancer better,” study co-leader Professor Bart Vanhaesebroeck told The Telegraph. “The good guys win. And it seems to work on all cancers.”
The drug is already heading to clinical trials and was granted Breakthrough Therapy status by the

New approach makes cancer cells explode

Updated on 2014-03-20. Published on 2014-03-20Denna sida på svenska
Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have discovered that a substance called Vacquinol-1 makes cells from glioblastoma, the most aggressive type of brain tumour, literally explode. When mice were given the substance, which can be given in tablet form, tumour growth was reversed and survival was prolonged. The findings are published in the journal Cell.

The established treatments that are available for glioblastoma include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. But even if this treatment is given the average survival is just 15 months. It is therefore critical to find better treatments for malignant brain tumours. Researchers at Karolinska Institutet and colleagues at Uppsala University have discovered an entirely new mechanism to kill tumour cells in glioblastoma. Researchers in an initial stage have exposed tumour cells to a wide range of molecules. If the cancer cells died, the molecule was considered of interest for further studies,

Scientists at Spain's National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) said on Wednesday they had made mature cells in living mice revert to their youthful, versatile state, in a step towards the goal of tissue regeneration by stem cells.
Right now, the technique is at its earliest stage and is hedged with safety questions, which makes it impossible to envisage in humans.
But, said the researchers, it opens up a new strategy leading to a beguiling end: that one day damaged tissue will be healed by simply reprogramming nearby adult cells into replacements for the lost or diseased area. A transplant would not be needed.
Stem cells have excited huge interest in medical research.
They are immature cells that differentiate into the specialized cells that comprise and maintain the human body.
In 2006, a team led by Shinya Yamanaka in Japan announced a breakthrough.
A clutch of four genes introduced into adult cells in a lab dish rewound these cells back to their baby state.
These so-called induced pluripotent stem cells -- known by their acronym of iPS -- have since become the

Can You Eat to Reverse Multiple Sclerosis?

If you have a loved one with multiple sclerosis[1], (as I do), you’ll love what this next post is about. It features the inspiring story of Dr. Terry Wahls[2], who reversed her multiple sclerosis after seven years of deterioration — simply by changing her diet. That she did it within 8 months and went on to complete an 18 mile bicycle tour is nothing short of miraculous. No drug has ever been able to claim the same results. Coming across her story late last year was the best Christmas present ever.
Dr. Wahls is a professor of internal medicine at the University of Iowa, where she teaches, and does rounds in a traumatic brain injury clinic. This conventional medical doctor had the courage to step outside the medical paradigm.  Initially diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS in 2000, she went the conventional route and was taking chemotherapy drugs and other immune suppressants in an attempt to slow the disease.
By 2003, Dr Wahls transitioned to ‘Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis’ (the more advanced form), and had to begin using a tilt-recline wheelchair because of weakness in her back muscles. In MS, the immune system becomes sensitized to and attacks proteins in the myelin sheath which protects the axons of the central nervous system.[3]
Like anyone with a degenerative condition, she wanted to forestall further deterioration as long as possible. Because of her medical training, Dr. Wahls knew that research in animal models of disease is often 20 or 30 years ahead of clinical practice. She stayed up late each night to scour through

Shock study: Chemotherapy can backfire, make cancer worse by triggering tumor growth

Healthy cells damaged by chemotherapy secrete more of a protein called WNT16B, which boosts cancer cell survival

Healthy cells damaged by chemotherapy secrete more of a protein called WNT16B, which boosts cancer cell survival
Scientists found that healthy cells damaged by chemotherapy secreted more of a protein called WNT16B, which boosts cancer cell survival. 'The increase in WNT16B was completely unexpected," said Peter Nelson, of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Long considered the most effective cancer-fighting treatment, chemotherapy may actually make cancer worse, according to a shocking new study.
The extremely aggressive therapy, which kills both cancerous and healthy cells indiscriminately, can cause healthy cells to secrete a protein that sustains tumor growth and resistance to further treatment.
Researchers in the United States made the "completely unexpected" finding while seeking to explain why cancer cells are so resilient inside the human body when they are easy to kill in the lab.
They tested the effects of a type of chemotherapy on tissue collected from men with prostate cancer, and found "evidence of DNA damage" in healthy cells after treatment, the scientists wrote in Nature Medicine.
Chemotherapy works by inhibiting reproduction of fast-dividing cells such as those found in tumors.
The scientists found that healthy cells damaged by chemotherapy secreted more of a protein called WNT16B which boosts cancer cell survival.
"The increase in WNT16B was completely unexpected," study co-author Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle told AFP.
The protein was taken up by tumor cells neighboring the damaged cells.
"WNT16B, when secreted, would interact with nearby tumor cells and cause them to grow, invade,

German medicine rocked by Leipzig organ donor scandal

Doctor waiting for kidney to be removed from donor (file photo - June 2012) A worldwide shortage of organ donors has put pressure on many transplant clinics
Prosecutors are investigating an organ donor scandal in the east German city of Leipzig in which doctors allegedly manipulated an organ waiting list.
Three doctors have been suspended at the Leipzig University Clinic's organ transplant centre.
German media report that 38 patients with liver problems were falsely listed as dialysis cases in order to shorten their wait for a transplant.
Competition between transplant centres may be to blame, experts say.
There is a worldwide shortage of organ donors - a factor that may have exacerbated competition.
The board director at the Leipzig clinic, Wolfgang Fleig, said he could not rule out that money may have changed hands in the Leipzig scandal.
All the cases in the scandal concern liver patients, and all but one of the alleged manipulations took place in

World Renown Heart Surgeon Speaks Out On What Really Causes Heart Disease

We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong. So, here it is. I freely admit to being wrong.. As a heart surgeon with 25 years experience, having performed over 5,000 open-heart surgeries, today is my day to right the wrong with medical and scientific fact.

I trained for many years with other prominent physicians labelled “opinion makers.”  Bombarded with scientific literature, continually attending education seminars, we opinion makers insisted heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.

The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake. The latter of course we insisted would lower cholesterol and heart disease. Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possibly result in malpractice.

It Is Not Working!

These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible. The discovery a few years
